FAQ

WHY ARE YOU CHANGING SUNFLOWER OIL TO RAPESEED OIL IN YOUR PRODUCTS?

Why are we making this change?

A significant proportion of global sunflower oil supply comes from Ukraine. Due to the tragic escalation of conflict in this region, supplies of sunflower oil have been severely restricted.
In order to ensure the continuity of supply of our products, we have made the temporary change from sunflower oil to rapeseed oil.

Which packs of Cereal are affected?

This will affect Jordans products which list oil as an ingredient, with batch code number ‘2127’ or higher. you can find our product batch codes by checking the best before panel on product packaging.

Due to the speed at which events have progressed, we have had to take this measure before being able to reflect this change on all our product labelling, which will follow as soon as possible. Please be assured, despite this change, the nutritional values on pack are still representative of the product.

Is this a safe change?

As always, Food Safety remains an absolute priority for us at Jordans Cereals, and this change has been made in line with recommendations by the Food Standards Agency, on the basis that it poses minimal risk to consumers. For more information about this, please visit: https://www.food.gov.uk/research/research-projects/rapid-risk-assessment-on-the-risk-of-allergic-reactions-in-uk-consumers-if-sunflower-oil-is-substituted-with-refined-rapeseed

If you are looking to find if your local store stocks your favourite Jordans product, we would recommend calling their Head Office Customer Service team directly as they will hopefully have more information, they can share with you.

HAVE YOU STOPPED MAKING...

Sadly, we no longer make;

Absolute Nut Bars, Breakfast Multigrain Bars or our Crunchy Bars but why not try our deliciously chewy Frusli bars instead?

Truly Fruity Muesli and Four Nut Muesli - but why not try our New Berry Burst Muesli or for a nut lover our Super Nutty Granola is delicious.

Wheatbran & Wheatgerm - Sadly we have discontinued making our Wheatbran and Wheatgerm due to a number of factors; we have struggled to get a high-quality reliable source and the retailers no longer want to stock it due to low sales volumes

Sorry if one of your old favourites is in this list – we hope you will be able to find a new favourite, why not take a look at our other tasty products on our Products page.

HOW DOES SUPER GRANOLA HELP TO LOWER MY CHOLESTEROL?

Now there's a question we think we should leave to the professionals to give you the full answer. So, here's what they say: The inclusion of Jordans Super Granola as part of a balanced diet and a healthy lifestyle can help reduce cholesterol levels. Each 45g serving provides 1g of beta-glucan soluble fibre, one third of the suggested daily intake of 3g. High cholesterol is a risk factor in the development of coronary heart disease. Coronary heart disease has multiple risk factors and altering one of these risk factors may or may not have a beneficial effect.

DO ANY OF YOUR PRODUCTS CONTAIN SALT?

We do not add any salt into any of the cereals or cereal bars on sale in the UK.

WHERE DO YOU SOURCE YOUR INGREDIENTS FROM?

Many of the ingredients that we use in our products are whole grains, and most of these are sourced from nature-friendly British farms. The rest of the ingredients that we use, such as crunchy nuts, juicy berries, tropical fruits, sugar and oil are globally sourced to ensure that our standards for best taste and highest quality are met.

For more information about our how we source ingredients and protect nature click here https://jordanscereals.co.uk/w...

WHAT DOES THE "MAY ALSO CONTAIN" STATEMENT MEAN?

Although these ingredients aren’t purposefully added to our recipe, we like to make you aware of other ingredients that are used at the same manufacturing site– we need to tell you about these just to be on the safe side, in case someone eating the product has a severe allergy.

WHY DO SOME OF YOUR CEREALS CONTAIN SUGAR?

All fruits store energy naturally in the form of sugars, but they also contain vitamins, minerals and other nutrients. There are lots of benefits from eating natural foods that are rich in whole grains, dried fruits, nuts and seeds.

In some of our baked cereal recipes we use sugar as a natural binding ingredient to hold clusters of oats together and occasionally we add some honey for flavour too. We don’t add salt to any of our recipes and are actively looking at ways to reduce fat and sugar whilst retaining our great natural taste we know you love.

Because of our use of natural ingredients, our recipes will never be ‘sugar free’ or ‘fat free’; but we are committed to ensure they all provide a good balance of the nutrients, vitamins, minerals that our bodies need.

DO YOU USE PALM OIL?

Our products do not contain Palm Oil.

DO ANY OF YOUR PRODUCTS HAVE ADDITIVES OR FOOD COLOURING IN THEM?

No, we don’t use any additives or food colouring in any of our products. We think there is enough good natural stuff out there already to make our products tasty without needing to add anything artificial.

WHY DO SOME OF YOUR CEREALS CONTAIN FAT?

Oats, nuts and seeds all store energy naturally in the form of fats, but typically these are ‘good’ fats (both poly and monounsaturated) that your body needs. These natural ingredients also contain vitamins, minerals and other nutrients too.

In some of our baked cereals we add some natural oils to bind the oats together. We always seek to blend the oils that we use to provide the greatest amount of ‘good’ polyunsaturated and monounsaturated fats and limit saturated fat content.

We are committed to reducing the use of ‘added’ oil and to optimising the types of oils we use.

ARE JORDANS PRODUCTS SUITABLE FOR VEGETARIANS & VEGANS?

All our products are suitable for vegetarians. For those following a vegan diet we do use milk chocolate and honey in some of our delicious recipes and all our cereals are made within the same manufacturing facility. So there is a very small risk of cross contamination between products and we cannot fully state 100% suitable for Vegans. Please see below link to our site, where you can find our full range of products with full ingredient and nutritional information. We can confirm a full clean down of the lines are completed after each production run.

ARE JORDANS PRODUCTS GLUTEN FREE?

No - We do not recommend any of our products as being suitable for those avoiding Gluten. This is due to a protein called Avenin which is chemically very similar to gluten and can cause the same adverse reaction if you are intolerant to oats & wheat. Therefore, we cannot 100% guarantee our products are wheat free due to the risk of cross contamination - although a full clean down of machinery is undertaken after each batch is produced, there may still be a small chance of contamination.

ARE JORDANS PRODUCTS KOSHER?

No - Our cereal products are not Kosher and have not been certified as such for some time. Some Kosher websites do state some of our products are Kosher but as they are not certified we always advise they are not.

ARE JORDANS PRODUCTS FORTIFIED WITH IRON?

We do not fortify any Jordans products (i.e.. add extra iron), so our products contain only naturally occurring vitamins and minerals. Having said this, there is naturally occurring iron in some of our plant ingredients, such as oats, but the exact levels of iron depend on the specific cereal recipe.

DOES THE INTERTWINED ARROWS SYMBOL MEAN THE PACKAGING IS RECYCLABLE?

The short answer is no. Whilst it’s easy to get this mixed up with recycling symbols, the intertwined black and white arrows symbol (also known as ‘the green dot’) is actually a European mark that means a producer complies with the European Packaging Waste system directive. This directive dictates that if you make food packaged food products in Europe, you are required to recover that packaging, and the Green Dot scheme facilitates this as the standard take-back program in Europe.

To make this less confusing we’re in the process of removing this logo from our packaging.

IS YOUR PACKAGING RECYCLABLE?

When it comes to sustainability, we know that packaging & plastics are incredibly important. That’s why we’re working hard to make sure that our packaging is as sustainable as possible whilst at the same time keeping your cereal at the high quality you’d expect.

As part of this, we’ve have signed up to the UK Plastics Pact – a world first that means we’re working on hitting the following ambitious targets as quickly as possible:

Eliminate problematic or unnecessary single-use plastic packaging through redesign, innovation or alternative (re-use) delivery models.

100% of plastic packaging to be reusable or recyclable

70% of plastic packaging effectively recycled or composted

30% average recycled content across all plastic packaging

You can find out more about the UK Plastics Pact here: http://www.wrap.org.uk/content...

What this means is that currently:

  • Cereal Boxes: are made from FSC-certified cardboard and are all WIDELY RECYCLED with paper in your local council collection.
  • Bags inside our cereal boxes: these can be RECYCLED WITH CARRIER BAGS AT LARGER SUPERMARKETS.
  • Granola Pouches, Natural Muesli Bags & Frusli bar wrappers: regrettably, these are not currently recycled – but we are working on this as quickly as we can.

WHY DO YOU NOT USE COMPOSTABLE OR BIODEGRADABLE PACKAGING?

We’ve investigated compostable packaging materials, and after careful consideration, we don’t believe that compostable materials are the right thing for our products. This is because whilst compostable packaging materials have the potential to break down more quickly than conventional packaging, they will only do so if exposed to very specific conditions.

Depending on the material, different levels of warmth, moisture, microbes and oxygen are all required to break compostable packaging down. Whilst these conditions are found in home compost heaps and Industrial Composting facilities, most of the UK doesn’t have access to these facilities. For example, only 3%* of UK households have home compost heaps and the majority of Council food waste collections go to ‘Anaerobic Digesters’ - a totally different process to composting.

The lack of composting facilities means that most compostable packaging is likely to end up with general waste where they are unlikely to degrade as landfill does not have the composting conditions needed to break them down. The same goes for compostable packaging that leaks out into the environment: composting conditions are not present in the open countryside or in our oceans meaning compostable packaging has the potential to litter our land & oceans in the same way as plastic does.

There is also the risk that compostable packaging is often indistinguishable from plastic packaging, and so can contaminate the plastic recycling process.

With all of this in mind, we currently do not believe compostable plastics are a sustainable solution until a better composting infrastructure is developed within the UK.

WHY DO YOU USE BAGS INSIDE OF YOUR CEREAL BOXES?

Nearly all the cereals we make either include nuts or are baked with some oil to form the crunchy clusters that we all love. This means that we need to put them into a plastic bag within our cereal boxes to make sure that they stay crunchy. Just as you find when you wrap anything oily in paper, if we were to put our cereals directly into a paper box, the oil would move from the ingredients into the cardboard, affecting the quality of the cereal and making the cardboard un-recyclable. When it comes to our porridge, regrettably this must use the same packaging equipment as our Country Crisp & Muesli products. Whilst this isn’t ideal, we have been able to make sure the plastic bags within our cereal boxes are fully recyclable. Just take them to a supermarket near you where they can be recycled with carrier bags.
